It does everything, wow!,
I received one of these via a rewards program. I like my mp3 and Pandora for road trips and I put this setup in a van I just got. It took me quite a while to find a unit that had both the USB and AUX audio inputs via aforementioned program. It has been a couple years since I bought car audio and I wasn’t overly impressed with current offerings until I found this one.
Install was super simple with this Kenwood’s instructions and the two car accessories to fit to the dash and wiring. The instruction booklet is thick and it needs to be to cover all the options. Upon installation, I tuned into local radio channels and the channel names and genre are scrolling in the display. HD stations come in with noticeably better clarity and the tuner has indicators to show type of reception. In my market, the HD stations each have (and use) 2 channels. The quality is amazing also because the original 11 year old speakers are in the van; listening to this receiver, the quality is much better than the factory receiver. If you’re only making music for yourself, new speakers might not be necessary.
The color highlights around the controls fade through the color spectrum. I normally don’t dig that kind of stuff but it’s really nice, so I didn’t set it to stay on one color.
The remote control has plenty of features but I didn’t bother to play with it and started messing around with the bluetooth and my Droid RAZR. The Kenwood requires a PIN / passcode to be entered before it will associate with a remote device. This was the first time I ever needed to do that. Was tricky but one second try, I did something right and it worked. The Kenwood then says “DOWNLOADING”, which I later find out it downloads my contacts from the phone.
I haven’t yet figured out how to make it sync with Pandora on my phone (so that the Kenwood can control the station, thumbs up/down, and skip), but it was super easy to start bluetooth then play Pandora on the phone. The audio then streams over BT to the stereo. In reading the directions, in BT audio mode, the deck can navigate through your songs the same was as when a USB stick with music is plugged into the USB port.
Given all that, I’m not sure a physical CD will ever make it to the receiver… If this receiver had an option to not have a CD, I would buy it in a heartbeat. I would buy this until with my own money (not rewards money) and that’s quite the testament from me! Now I’ve got to get one for my daily driver…
