Bad reviewers tend to not read instructions … great detector.,
The Cobra XRS-9570 is, in fact, a great radar detector that doesn’t break the wallet. I don’t know what’s wrong with many of the folks who give terrible reviews of these things but clearly they probably didn’t read the instructions. This is a RADAR DETECTOR, thus, it needs a clear, level line of site (although I’ve seen some nice Valentine’s that don’t need to be level to work phenomenally, ie. motorcycle on-dash ones). The range of this Cobra series works really well. I’ve had maybe 1-2 false alarms in the past 2 months of using this due to X alerts from automatic doors on businesses located just off the highway. Other than that, I’ve seen nothing but great results. Over hills, from a distance, and 360 degrees … I am very impressed with this radar detector. In fact I was alerted to a Ka just over a hill and sure enough, there was a sly officer hanging out in a great spot (of course I wasn’t speeding so I didn’t worry… heh). I have mine mounted towards the bottom of my front windshield. It is just above the wiper blades and has a line of site out the rear of the vehicle just above the back seats of my SUV (Honda CR-V).
Furthermore, this radar detector comes with 1-press mute button, and is able to be programmable to shut down during low-RPM movement which is a headache-saver during slow traffic in the city.
The only problem I had was with the mounting/suction cups. However, I installed these in the middle of winter so I had to use warm water on the cups to make them more bendable. Once they weren’t basically frozen, they attached to the windshield just fine. The metal bracket that holds the radar detector works very well and is sturdy (the detector doesn’t shake much when driving over bumpy roads). I do suggest to take OFF the detector to bend the bracket if it isn’t level (this is also in the instructions… it’s super easy).
So, in conclusion I highly recommend the Cobra XRS-9570. It isn’t ungodly expensive, its range is great, and the adjustabilities (volume, detection, speed-shut down), make this a great detector. Please don’t listen to the person who haphazardly gave this a 0 star review with terrible grammar. Read the easy instructions that come with this detector and you’ll very much like it.

|Great detector! Love it, but…,
This is a really nice radar detector, and is a clear upgrade to the previous model that i bought 5-6 years ago. i still use the old one in my old car, and this one actually picks up more signals than my old one (this one picks up weaker signals that take my old one longer to see). One thing i’ve noticed however, is that when i first turn the car on and the unit boots up, if the car was really hot, the detector will sound a K-alert, and will continue to sound it until it cools off. When this happens, it seems to be picking up itself, cuz when i park in front of my house, the signal gets stronger. Furthermore, on the occasions where it picks itself up on startup, i’ve noticed that it tends to experience a delayed response for he remainder of the time that it is on; i passed a cop on a one lane road, and 30 seconds later, it spiked the Ka-alert as if there was a cop aiming straight at me (with no other cars anywhere around). This has only happened twice, and the times where it isnt hot on startup it works just fine, picking up all the automatic doors and cops that my other one did. I docked it one star because i have to be cautious not to let mine overheat, but i’m pretty sure its an issue with my unit, and not a problem with the model.
OTHER DETAILS:
The voice is female, and sounds like your average computerized female voice, pleasant but mechanical. When it goes off, it makes the beeping sound associated with the band (X, K, Ka, etc), then announces the band while scrolling text on the screen, then reverts to the beeping sound. The volume is very loud at 10, and can’t hear it with the car running at 2. When it first detects an alert, it maintains full volume for 5-7 seconds, then cuts the volume in half for the remainder of that alert (my old one did the same thing). i usually leave it at volume 5, its enough to hear it when it first goes off, then it cuts down to background noise after 5 secs. The included power cord is a pre-coiled stretchy cable, and if you mount your detector near the top of your windshield, it pulls it down pretty heavily. i recommend buying the direct wire kit, or finding a straight cable adapter if you don’t mount it just over the dash.
ALL IN ALL: I would buy this same model again, and love how compact it is. I’ve used the cheapo whistler brands in the past, and they just don’t really compare to the quality of Cobra. I may have to do a warranty exchange on mine, but i’m still a fan of this unit.
UPDATE, June 2012
Have been using this for at least 2 months, and the issue described above (delayed response due to overheating) has never returned since those first two times, even though the car has been quite hot a number of times. I’m willing to give it the 5th star back, seeing as how it has performed perfectly ever since..
